There are all types of families: messy and complicated, sickeningly sweet, thick as thieves, unusually normal, or textbook dysfunctional. It doesn’t matter, as they all come with their own set of rules and problems. Nonny Frett comes from two families known for their disdain for one another. Biologically, she is a tall, willowy Crabtree with flaming red hair and a temper to match, who was abandoned by her teen mother. But she was adopted, raised, and nurtured by the Fretts, an upstanding and well-respected family run by the formidable matriarch Bernese, who rules her business and family with a firm hand.
Joshilyn Jackson paints a picture of two families that, while being sworn enemies and as different as night and day, are also exactly the same in their beliefs about family. Each family lays claim to Nonny and demands her loyalty and her love. A traumatic incident will test the entire town, opening old wounds and igniting new flames of fury. Nonny, knowing that she is the only thing keeping the Fretts and Crabtrees from an all out war, will have to figure out a way to appease both sides while avoiding being consumed by either side. On top of it all is a weighty decision in her personal life that needs her attention as well.
All the ingredients for an entertaining read are here: eccentric Southern families, generational feuds, and family expectations. The characters are realistic and the storyline moves along quickly. While Between, Georgia is a real town, Jackson’s fictional Between is quaint, cozy, a tourist spot far off the beaten path, and the battleground for the love of Nonny. Family is the focus, and Jackson challenges the reader to examine what the word “family” means to them, and how far they will go to protect all that they hold dear.
