The story is a simple one. A young man leaves home in search of treasure. He starts off with a spirit of adventure, but the realities of life begin to show up. The choices that he makes not only determine his success or failure, but also his outlook on life. Along the way, he meets interesting characters while experiencing life’s joys, triumphs, and wonders. There are also plenty of mishaps, some heartache, and confusion thrown in for good measure. He realizes that taking chances is a part of life. The old adage of “nothing ventured, nothing gained” certainly applies.
Before I finished reading this book, I was already assessing my own personal legend and renewing my commitment to the journey that I have chosen to embark upon. That is what a good book is supposed to do- make you think about your own life and how you have handled it.
You don’t need a lot of time to get through The Alchemist. It is beautiful in it’s simplicity. This is a book that will lead you to a quiet “aha” moment every time you read it. And you will want to re-read it time and time again.
If you are looking for something that will entertain you and make you think about your life- where you are headed, how did you end up where you are- then by all means, The Alchemist is for you. You probably won’t have a big bang revelation. More like a soul-deep recognition- subtle, yet powerful, and totally changing the way that you see yourself and your world.
