No one enjoys being isolated, set apart from others; but there’s a point in your life where making a stand will leave you standing on the sidelines alone… even if it’s only temporary. It amazes me how we allow others to influence our decisions, our choices, our behaviors… some not as obvious… others…clear as day. I love the poem by Robert Frost, “The Road Less Traveled”, because it deals with choosing to go in a direction that’s not as popular as the road with all the wear & tear.
I am reminded of a conversation that I had with a friend. I felt it to be needful before he made a major move in his life. In this conversation I asked him to really evaluate his life, in all aspects – the good as well as the bad… and ask himself, “Am I living with a purpose?” I believe God places us in situations that create moments, sometimes seasons of isolation, to help us focus on what’s really important. As Fred Hammond put’s it… “It’s so hard to hear your voice Lord, with distractions all around.” It is during the quiet moments in our life, that God begins to transform us, if we allow it. It’s not often a comfortable state to be in… the process can be painful, especially if there are some things that need “cutting away”.
Each of us has been called for a purpose. That’s not just a statement for those that are in ministry to preach the gospel, but for everyone that has the ability to stand out and make a difference. Don’t allow yourself to be so easily swayed to do things that you don’t do… if you’re not a drinker, why be seen with a beer or cocktail in your hand…you’ve become a contradiction not only to yourself, but to those who are watching you and believe me, you are being watched. Someone is listening to every word that precede from our lips and making mental notations… the question is, will you come out fitting in or standing out!
