Green Zone

Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon re-team for a mutated jumble of action movie violence and liberal self-congratulation

Green Zone is an exercise in commercial cowardice masquerading as a thriller about political bravery. A film at odds not just with recent history but also with itself, it’s been filmed like an action movie but scripted at times like a sequel to Syriana. It’s hard to imagine the testosterone set wanting to swallow so much half-baked commentary on American incompetence with their gunfire, chase scenes and explosions. Unless the studio’s overt campaign to make people think this is an unofficial entrée in the Bourne franchise proves effective, Green Zone will open well based on star power and then do a fast fade.

New Matt Damon movie may bring Iraq war into mainstream

NEW YORK (Reuters) – They conjured box office magic with their "Bourne" spy movies, but Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass risk their reputation as sure-fire hitmakers when the Iraq war thriller "Green Zone" debuts on Friday.

The action movie, which reunites A-list actor Damon and Greengrass, an accomplished director, aims to be the first big movie about the ongoing Iraq war to break through to mainstream U.S. audiences.

Oscar's big question: How did David slay Goliath?

NEW YORK – For Hollywood pundits, industry folk and Oscar fans still paying attention on Monday, a major question remained: How did David slay Goliath?

For as much as "The Hurt Locker" was the critics' darling, it had three major strikes against it in its battle against the mighty James Cameron's "Avatar."

Alice in Wonderland

Everything you hope it will be

Director Tim Burton returns to his ‘A’ game with this magnificent, visually stunning movie that is not only one of his best, it is indeed a wonder. Adapting the famous Lewis Carroll books but updating them and making Alice a 19 year old bride-to-be, Burton and his screenwriter, Linda Woolverton, have taken a twisted tale and twisted it some more to create an astonishing and magical movie full of surprises and fantastic characters. Expect monstrous box office returns and bountiful DVD action even if Disney does break the video window with the release of 2010’s first true potential blockbuster.
